Big stage, big expectations – and Fernando Mendoza delivered. At the Indiana Hoosiers’ Pro Day, the Heisman Trophy winner attracted everyone’s attention and presented himself in strong form in front of scouts from all 32 NFL teams.

More than 100 media representatives as well as numerous friends, family and former teammates were there to see the quarterback, who is considered a safe candidate for the first pick in the upcoming NFL draft. And Mendoza used the opportunity not only for himself, but also to put the spotlight on his teammates.

“I think it went great,” Mendoza said after completing around 56 passes at John Mellencamp Pavilion. “There were also quarterbacks who had shorter pro days, but I wanted to make sure everyone could showcase their skills in front of all teams with routes that would be relevant in NFL play.”

The 22-year-old impressed with throws from all distances as well as passes on the move. Not everything went perfectly, a few balls narrowly missed their target, but that shouldn’t hurt his draft status.

NFL: Several conversations with the Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders are considered a safe buyer for the quarterback with the first pick. This would also be emotionally appropriate for Mendoza – he is an avowed fan of Raiders co-owner Tom Brady.

Despite all the praise, Mendoza doesn’t think he has reached his goal yet: “I’m doing everything I can to be the best possible quarterback this season,” he said. “But I know that at the next level there will be a lot more plays under center and that’s a big change. I’ll have to get used to that. Not only that, the hash marks are closer together and the pace of play is faster. But I’m excited to learn all these things.”

Mendoza has already had several conversations with the Raiders – at the combine and in video conferences. One more meeting is scheduled before the draft starts on April 23rd. Until then, the top favorite has to wait and see – and keep working on himself.
