Third Austrian in a row
New national ski jumping coach has been chosen
April 1, 2026 – 2:18 p.mReading time: 2 minutes

The German Ski Association presents the successor to Stefan Horngacher. The sports director relies on an internal solution instead of external impulses.
First assistant, now boss: Andreas Mitter becomes the new national coach of the German ski jumpers. The 44-year-old succeeds Stefan Horngacher, who announced his departure after seven years.
Mitter: “I’m very happy and would like to contribute my know-how and experience.” He most recently worked as Horngacher’s assistant since 2023, and previously worked, among other things, as head coach in Finland.
The German Ski Association did not provide any information about the contract term. Mitter has been active in the association since 2019 and was most recently involved in Felix Hoffmann’s rise to the top of the world. He worked in Finland from 2016 to 2018, but ended his work there because of the difficult financial situation in the association.
“Andreas knows the ski jumping system in Germany in all its facets. We trust that he can provide the necessary new impetus with his expertise and high level of commitment,” said DSV sports director Horst Hüttel.
Now he has a central task: to rejuvenate the German team and introduce young talent to the top level. At the same time, it is about developing a new dynamic – similar to the time under Werner Schuster from 2008 onwards. Olympic champion Philipp Raimund is currently considered the only DSV jumper at world-class level, while experienced athletes such as Andreas Wellinger and Karl Geiger are having a disappointing season.
After Schuster and Horngacher, Mitter is the third Austrian in a row to hold the position. The last German national coach to date was Peter Rohwein from 2004 to 2008. Thomas Thurnbichler was also considered a possible candidate for a long time, but he remains coach of the B squad.
