April 1, 2026 – 5:09 p.mReading time: 1 min.
No football league moves such large sums of money as the English Premier League. A top club has incurred a huge loss despite large revenues.
Chelsea FC posted a pre-tax loss of the equivalent of 300.95 million euros (262.4 million pounds) for the financial year ending June 30, 2025. This is the highest loss of this kind ever reported in the Premier League. The London club cites increased operating costs as the cause.
Chelsea has submitted its annual accounts to Companies House, the club announced on Wednesday. The previous Premier League record was held by Manchester City with a pre-tax loss of 226.5 million euros (197.5 million pounds) from the 2010/11 season. FC Barcelona holds the international negative record: 555 million euros from the 2020/21 season.
Last month, Chelsea also admitted that they had violated Premier League rules. It involved undisclosed payments of around 54.5 million euros (£47.5 million) from the time under previous owner Roman Abramowitsch. The club was fined €12.3m (£10.75m) and given a one-year suspended transfer ban.
Despite the record loss, Chelsea reported revenue of around 563 million euros (£490.9 million) – the second highest in the club’s history. Chelsea attributes this to increased television revenue, participation in the Club World Cup and winning the Conference League.
