The polder at the Etersheimerbraak was created because the sand was used to create the Markermeerdijk. Because the peat in South Holland sank faster than in our province, the honor of deepest point in the Netherlands went to Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel. Where there is now a monument.
“Hollands Noorderkwartier is not the water board with the most inhabitants or the oldest, but we are again the water board with the deepest point,” says dike manager Remco Bosma happily after NH’s excavation action, which you see in the video. As a trophy, the dike manager receives a patch of earth that makes a difference.
New responsibility
The new status also gives new responsibilities. There is a plan for an electricity station in the Wieringermeer.
“We are not happy with that,” the dike manager said. “Everyone knows that you should not put your tent at the deepest point of the campsite and we have to prepare ourselves for that.”
The dike manager hopes that more attention will be paid to housing construction in the polder. “Consider the meter cupboard to the second floor and sockets that are no longer placed near the ground.”
Tourists not welcome
Tourists cannot simply visit the deepest point, because it is on private land. The lowest polder in the Netherlands is clearly visible from Molen de Braak or the statue of Veenus on the Markermeerdijk.
A second measurement will have to show whether South Holland can still maintain the claim.
