Luis “Toto” Caputo was once again optimistic about the progress of the economy. In his latest statements, the head of the Treasury Palace stated that the activity is already showing clear signs of recovery and used an everyday example to explain it: the sale of household items. According to the official, the market has become more efficient and that currently allows “people to buy cheaper and better quality thermoses.”
The thermometer of consumption
For Caputo, this phenomenon is proof that the drop in inflation and the opening of imports are having a positive impact on the pocketbook. The Minister maintains that greater competition forces companies to offer better products at more competitive prices, allowing the average consumer to optimize their spending on everyday goods.
However, this diagnosis contrasts with data from the chambers of commerce and mass consumption, which still record declines in sales. For many analysts, the fact that the public is looking for cheaper options is not necessarily a sign of reactivation, but rather a savings strategy against the loss of purchasing power.
Cars and houses
The Minister went further and assured that the rebound is not limited to neighborhood businesses. According to his vision, the consumption of durable goods is growing strongly. “People now buy houses and cars,” said Caputo, alluding to a supposed record of operations that, for now, is not reflected with the same intensity in the records of dealerships and real estate companies.
The data breach
While the Government insists that the economy has already gotten out of the hole, industry and construction indicators continue to show numbers in the red. Caputo’s bet is that this perception of “gondola well-being” will soon be transferred to the rest of the sectors.
For the economic team, the success of the current plan depends on society beginning to notice these small improvements in the cost of living. Meanwhile, the Minister maintains his position: the reactivation is already underway and can be seen, according to him, even on the shelves of the bazaars.
