Lufthansa passengers are threatened with strikes by flight attendants.
In a strike vote by the UFO union at the core company Lufthansa and the regional subsidiary Cityline, cabin workers voted by a large majority in favor of industrial action. At the core company, around 94 percent voted for strikes, at Cityline almost 99 percent. A specific strike date was not announced.
UFO deputy boss Sara Grubisic said: “The colleagues have sent a clear signal: They are ready to stand up for their working conditions at Lufthansa and their social security at Lufthansa CityLine – and to follow this path consistently.” The union had already organized warning strikes at both companies.
From Ufo’s perspective, the reasons for the escalation are the stalled negotiations on the collective tariff at Lufthansa and the company’s unwillingness to negotiate a social collective agreement at Cityline. Around 800 livelihoods depended on it. According to management, the regional subsidiary’s flight operations are scheduled to end next year. A new company with the similar name Lufthansa City Airlines will take its place.
Many people willing to strike in the Lufthansa Group
Many groups in the Lufthansa Group are currently ready to strike. It was only this Friday that the airline reached an agreement with Verdi on a collective agreement for around 20,000 ground workers, thus averting strikes here.
However, the dispute over the pilots’ company pensions has not yet been resolved. Just a few weeks ago, hundreds of flights were canceled due to a pilot strike, and the travel plans of tens of thousands of passengers were disrupted. Pilots at the Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings and Lufthansa Cityline also recently voted in favor of strikes in strike votes.
After two waves of strikes, there have been no concrete strike threats recently. Recently, Lufthansa made an offer to talk to the Verband Cockpit (VC) pilots’ union, which brought movement into the collective bargaining dispute.
