Magic from the Honda Leopard rider who takes advantage of the brawl in front of him and overtakes the world championship leader in the photo finish. The tricolor fast is broken after four seasons

Federico Mariani

March 29 – 8.04pm – MILAN

After almost four years he returns to play the Italian anthem in Moto3. Thanks to Guido Pini: the Honda Leopard rider triumphs in Austin after an incredible battle with Maximo Quiles, Alvaro Carpe and Valentin Perrone. It is the first victory for the talent born in Borgo San Lorenzo on 10 January 2008. A triumph gained in the sprint, but built with calm, tactical acumen and cynicism, taking advantage of other people’s mistakes in the final metres. Second position for Quiles, who defends his lead in the World Championship. Carpe mocks Perrone after a very aggressive overtaking. The Argentine ends in tears.

STRATEGY

There are 14 laps to tackle. For everyone, the bugaboo is Quiles, who, despite starting eighth, seems to boast an exceptional pace. So poleman Carpe’s strategy is clear: start well and give the race a frenetic pace right from the first laps. Despite being followed by Perrone, the Spaniard is only half successful in his aim. The pace exhibited in the initial rounds selects the opponents. Only seven other pilots remain with him. Among these, in addition to Fernandez and Pini, however, there is also Quiles, who, on the fourth lap, breaks the deadlock and takes the lead. Chaos seems to reign behind the Spaniard. The fall of Pratama and Esteban reduces the number of members of the commanding group to five, but does not slow down the battles.

THE TURNING POINT

The race changes again on the eighth lap. Quiles begins to struggle, making some mistakes. Thus Pini and Perrone, who have become the main pursuers, get closer. With three laps to go, Guido breaks the deadlock and overtakes Quiles with a spell, replying even after the Spaniard’s response. Perrone tries to take advantage of it and takes second position. Carpe is also among the former. The battle becomes heated with repeated overtaking. Everything is decided at the last corner. Perrone is in front, but Carpe attacks him. The two Ktm standard bearers end up wide and give way to Pini, who, in the sprint, regulates Quiles. Italy returns to rejoice, having not won in this category since the 2022 Thailand GP, won by Dennis Foggia. The long fast is broken.
