Alexander Nübel will be between the posts against Ghana. National coach Julian Nagelsmann gives a specific reason.
Germany’s national coach Julian Nagelsmann announced at a press conference on Sunday afternoon that Oliver Baumann would not be in the Germany goal in the friendly against Ghana. Instead he will be replaced by Alexander Nübel. “It’s a reward for performance over a long period of time,” said Nagelsmann. The DFB coach praised Nübel’s development, saying he had performed “extremely well” especially since the winter.
The national coach does not want the decision to be understood as a demotion for Oliver Baumann, who is actually number one. “It’s not a casting,” Nagelsmann clarified.
He praised the fact that Nübel was “extremely loyal” to Baumann. This is important for the goalkeeping team and the entire team. “Alex is doing great and in other nations he would be number one,” said the national coach. Nübel, who will be supported by friends and family in the stadium, is “extremely happy”. He added succinctly at the press conference: “I can hardly wait.”
For Nübel, the game in Stuttgart will be a kind of home game as he is under contract with VfB. It would be the 29-year-old’s third international match. The game against Ghana is the last international match before the squad is nominated for the World Cup on May 12th. Nübel’s role as number two in the tournament “is clear,” the goalkeeper and Nagelsmann made it clear.
