People are reacting with horror to last night’s fatal stabbing incident in Hoorn. A massive brawl resulted in a stabbing. A 29-year-old man from Hoorn was fatally hit. Mayor Jan Nieuwenburg van Hoorn is silent: “This affects me deeply as mayor and I am also very shocked by this.”

Mayor Jan Nieuwenburg does not understand how this could have happened in Hoorn. “Unfortunately, like every city, we sometimes experience unrest, but this has not happened in years. It is always pleasant in the place where this happened and it is terrible that this evening turned out this way.”

It becomes apparent when the police are alerted at 11:20 PM on Saturday eveningto be completely wrong. About twenty people fought with each other on the Italian Zeedijk and Hoofd in Hoorn.

A local resident tells NH what he heard and saw. He says there was a party. “I heard it escalated. There was a lot of screaming and someone was even thrown into the water.”

‘Woman shouted at them to stop’

He saw it all happen from his home. “A young woman shouted at them to stop. Eventually it got out of hand, there was pulling and pushing.”

It became clear to him that something was very wrong. “But I didn’t know what exactly. There was such a tangle of people.”

He saw that someone was lying on the ground. “He didn’t move either. The police were mainly focused on breaking up the group, if they were able to do so.”

He says that it was a completely confusing situation for the police. The police themselves also confirm this. After the stabbing, there were several more skirmishes between bystanders and also with the police, the police already indicated. Several people have been arrested.

Friends come together

Friends of the victim announce that they want to come together this afternoon to share their grief. “I would like to wish the victim’s relatives a lot of strength with their great loss,” says Mayor Jan Nieuwenburg.

He continues: “It is now the most important thing that the situation is first properly mapped out. I have every confidence that the police and the Public Prosecution Service will do their utmost to do this. I would like to repeat their call to report you as a witness. And do not share your images on social media, share your images with the police.”
