Due to heavy rain that has continued for weeks and caused flooding, 108 people have now died across Kenya. That reports the national police on Saturday at X. Flash floods have been causing problems since March 6. In the meantime, approximately 2,700 people had to flee their low-lying homes.
According to the authorities, it is sometimes complicated to provide assistance because roads are flooded. There is also damage to bridges and electricity infrastructure, as well as farm fields.
In some places there is now less rain, but the authorities warn citizens that the risk of flooding has not yet passed. The saturated soil is more difficult to absorb water and the sewerage system is also overloaded.
Critics are demanding that Sakaja Arthur Johnson, the governor of the hard-hit capital Nairobi since 2022, resign reported Radio France Internationale Monday. Johnson’s election promise was that he would take care of the city’s water drainage, but according to the French radio station he has not kept it. The governor has deployed demolition crews to clear illegal encampments along riverbanks. According to him, these structures would make drainage more difficult.
