To spare his knees, David has taught himself a special running technique. “I take small steps and I walk upright. This way your knees take fewer hits,” he says during a few laps in Vondelpark.

The runner is ready. “That’s okay, because I’ve been training for this for two years. Although you never know what it will be like for your body to run about forty kilometers a day for two months. Of course, I haven’t been able to train for that. But if I run forty kilometers now, I don’t feel anything the next day. That seems like a good sign to me,” he laughs.

Brother Levi

The reason for his journey is personal. During the stem cell transplant of his brother Levi, for which he was the donor as a child, he spent two months in the Ronald McDonald House. His brother is now in perfect health again and David would like to give something back for that time. It has now he has already raised almost 50,000 euros.

His girlfriend follows him all those kilometers in the camper. He is determined to reach the finish line. “I don’t know how yet. Crawling, running or walking. But it will work anyway.”
