Fraudulent websites and fake shops are becoming increasingly sophisticated and difficult to detect. But Google offers several effective tools that can help detect suspicious sites and fake content. The reverse search is only part of a larger security arsenal.

Google Reverse Search: The Key to Image Verification

The most important tool in the fight against fraudulent websites is Google Image reverse search. This method works particularly effectively when checking product photos and company images, because suspicious online shops often use stolen images from other reputable providers or stock photos to appear trustworthy.

The application is very simple: You visit images.google.com, click on the camera symbol and upload the suspicious image or paste its URL. Google will then show where this image has already been used on the Internet. For example, if the alleged photo of a new online shop comes from a stock photo site or is already used by other sites, this is a clear warning signal.

Reverse search is particularly effective when exposing fake profiles on dating platforms or when checking news images. If identical photos are found in different contexts, this indicates fraud or manipulation.

Google Safe Browsing: Automatic protection against dangerous sites

In addition to manual image searches, Google is continuously working to protect users from fraudulent websites with its Safe Browsing system. According to Google’s help page, the company maintains lists of websites that pose a risk of malware, phishing and social engineering attacks.

Safe Browsing is enabled by default in Chrome and automatically warns users about dangerous sites. The system analyzes millions of websites every day and detects not only known threats, but also new suspicious patterns. If a user visits a page that is classified as dangerous, a red warning appears saying “Dangerous website”.

The technology works with three levels of protection: standard protection, which warns of known threats, extended protection, which also detects new, previously unknown threats in real time, and the option to deactivate the protection completely – which, however, is not recommended.

Additional Google anti-fraud tools

Google Safe Browsing is not just limited to the Chrome browser. The system also protects Gmail users from dangerous links in emails and prevents Google ads from pointing to fraudulent sites.

In addition, Google offers a transparency report that website operators and users can use to check the status of individual pages. This service indicates whether a particular URL is considered safe or whether there are security concerns.

The continuous development of Google’s systems is also reflected in the spam update carried out in August 2025, which was specifically aimed at removing manipulative websites with thin content and fraudulent elements from search results.

The limits of Google tools

Despite the advanced technology, Google’s recognition systems also have their limitations. AI-generated images are difficult to identify using reverse searches because they are often completely new and have no matches on the internet. Likewise, sophisticated fraudsters can quickly adapt their methods when known detection patterns are identified.

However, the combination of automatic protection measures and manual verification through tools like reverse image search provides effective protection against most fraud attempts. Users should always carry out several checks on suspicious offers and, if in doubt, avoid purchasing.
