Recommendations of the Editorial team

The summer of 2026 brings a rare scenario: While the World Cup is underway in North America, Europe is in the middle of its most intense concert and festival season. What at first glance seems like two separate worlds turns out to be full of conflict upon closer inspection. Unfortunately, the kick-off times for the World Cup coincide almost perfectly with the live prime time.

The decisive games of the preliminary round take place between 7:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., exactly when headliners play at festivals and large open-air shows reach their climax.

Of course, Germany, Austria and Switzerland are affected. But major European festivals are also coming under pressure. And, don’t worry: this article will be continually updated.

Read all the group phase collisions as well as the knockout phase collisions here.

THE GROUP PHASE

Guns N' Roses
Guns N’ Roses

The first major clash: June 14th

Even the start gives us stomach pains! Germany plays at 7:00 p.m., immediately followed by another top game at 10:00 p.m. Two strong football slots in one evening.

In parallel:

DJ BoBo plays in Berlin (okaaaaay, not that bad), Clueso in Fulda, Zucchero in Graz. However, several major festivals are running at the same time, including Nova Rock, Download, Pinkpop and Rock for People.

The result is a double competitive situation: first the Germany game, then another attractive evening game. For visitors this means the classic question: stage or screen.

The critical point: Saturday, June 20th

June 20th is the critical moment of the entire preliminary round. A Saturday, several games, including a Germany game at 10 p.m. At the same time, the European festival summer reaches its highest density here.

The following will be on stage this evening:

Helene Fischer in Frankfurt, Johannes Oerding in Hamburg, Montez in Berlin, Zucchero in Frankfurt. Running parallel with Hurricane, Southside, Hellfest, Graspop and Isle of Wight are some of Europe’s biggest festivals. This is where two systems completely collide. The football game hits the headliner slot. Unlike individual concerts, there are hardly any alternatives at festivals. Whoever is at the front of the stage stays there. Anyone who wants to watch the game leaves the situation completely. The question is: Where at the festival can I actually look at feet?

England, rock and a Tuesday evening: June 23rd

Conflicts also arise outside of German games. England will face Ghana in the evening on June 23rd. Major rock productions are running at the same time: Guns N’ Roses in Berlin, Def Leppard in Dortmund, Kings of Leon in Vienna.

The maximum conflict: June 25th

June 25th marks the peak of the overlap. Germany plays at 10 p.m., with another group game taking place at the same time. At the same time, an exceptionally dense concert field: Pulp in Berlin’s Tempodrom, Guns N’ Roses also in Berlin, Nina Chuba in Cologne, The Weeknd in Munich, Foreigner in Zurich. There are also major festivals like Tons of Rock. We think it couldn’t be worse.

Several major events start between 6:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. and run right into the decisive phase of the game. This will be hard.

The extended conflict window: June 26th and 27th

The last days of the preliminary rounds also remain tense. 9:00 p.m. games continue to clash with classic concert times. Wincent Weiss in Ulm, Unholy in Graz and again The Weeknd in Munich fall into this phase. Large festivals continue at the same time.

On June 27th the situation shifted slightly backwards. Games don’t start until 11 p.m. Concerts like Pulp in the Tempodrom or the Berliner Philharmoniker in the Waldbühne are either late or long over, in accordance with the noise protection rules. Maybe you can give each other the encores?

The time difference problem

What happens every day is not a coincidence, but has a system, unfortunately. The time slots are almost identical: concerts and festivals rely on important slots between 7:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. The World Cup games in European time are exactly in this area.

This results in an almost complete overlap. Festivals are particularly affected by this because they rely on fixed dramaturgies. Headliners cannot be postponed at short notice without disrupting the entire program.
