GroenLinks and the Labor Party have a new, joint name: from now on the two parties will continue as Progressive Netherlands, abbreviated as PRO. Party leader Jesse Klaver just announced this at a members meeting in Amsterdam.
“Progressive means fighting for a fair and just society,” Klaver said in a speech on Thursday afternoon. “The mission of our movement is progress. Not just for a few or the very rich, but progress for all.” Progressive Netherlands should be given the abbreviation PRO, “because we are not against it, but fight with hope and optimism for a fair Netherlands.”
The party’s new logo is ‘Progressive Netherlands’ in red letters and a rose in green. According to Klaver, the logo should symbolize the alliance between social democracy and the “green movement”.
Municipal elections
In June 2025, a large majority of members of both parties agreed to a merger. Shortly afterwards, PvdA prominent Frans Timmersmans was nominated as a ‘prime minister’s candidate’ – but he failed to deliver a prime minister in two consecutive House of Representatives elections.
The hope remains a broad popular party, but GroenLinks-PvdA also lost votes in many municipalities in this month’s municipal elections. In more than eight in ten municipalities, the party obtained a lower percentage of the votes compared to 2022.
Progressive Netherlands will be officially founded on June 13 at the founding conference in the Brabanthallen in Den Bosch. The merger makes Progressive Netherlands the largest party in the country with 103,000 members.
