The police have arrested a 17-year-old boy from Veldhoven and a 30-year-old Amsterdam resident for involvement in the fireworks incident during the Eredivisie match between Ajax and FC Groningen. They are suspected of, among other things, open violence and trespassing, the police reported on Thursday.
The match in the Johan Cruijff ArenA was stopped after 5 minutes on Sunday, November 30, after fireworks were set off by the hard core of supporters of the home team.
Duel stopped
According to the police, an emergency exit had recently been opened, during which stewards were pushed aside and intimidated. A group of supporters could enter the stadium without a ticket, but with fireworks.
After an interruption of more than forty minutes, many fireworks were set off again when the match resumed. The referee then permanently stopped the match.
‘Research in full swing’
Under the direction of the Public Prosecution Service, the criminal investigation department conducted an investigation that focused on persons ‘who fulfilled an important and/or coordinating role’, according to the police. The investigation is still ‘in full swing’ and the police have not ruled out new arrests.
