In Maldegem in East Flanders and Schoten in Antwerp, two petrol stations have become the target of ‘shimming’. The HLN research unit discovered this. Criminals place a chip in the payment terminal or hack the network, causing payments to be sent to their account. The Antwerp public prosecutor’s office confirms that at least 20 reports have already been filed and does not rule out that even more gas stations are the target of this new form of fraud. “If you want to pay safely, it is best to do so inside the gas station.”
