German basketball could also benefit from the NBA’s expansion plans. Alba Berlin is about to build a new hall.
Alba Berlin is one of the most successful basketball clubs in the country with eleven German championships. Due to its location, the capital city club plays a major role in the US professional league NBA’s plans for a European branch. Alba Berlin should get a new arena for this.
The club confirmed this to RBB on Wednesday. Accordingly, a new multi-purpose hall for the top club is to be built in the southeast of the city between the Johannisthal and Adlershof S-Bahn stations. A capacity of 15,000 spectators is planned, and a training center for professional and youth teams is also planned. The costs are expected to run into the hundreds of millions.
According to Berlin’s sports senator Iris Spranger, the Senate supports Alba’s proposal. “We’ve been looking for a home for Alba for years. Since then we’ve looked at a lot of locations. I think we’ve found exactly the right one in Adlershof,” she said.
Marco Baldi, managing director of the basketball club, wants to present a feasibility study on Friday. Construction could begin quickly on the site, which is owned by the state. “You can start building straight away. I’m very excited, but we would have to get it done by 2027,” said Spranger confidently.
According to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, the European branch of the US league is scheduled to start in October 2027. No locations have been officially confirmed for the league yet, but Berlin’s chances are likely to increase thanks to Alba’s stadium plans. In addition to the capital, Munich is also considered a likely option. Metropolises like London, Paris or Rome should also have good cards.
It is unclear to what extent the NBA will provide financial support for the construction of a new hall. According to Spranger, Alba Berlin has to take care of the financing itself. The club has now announced that discussions with possible investors are already underway.
