Remco Evenepoel and Jonas Vingegaard engage in a thrilling duel until the Belgian falls shortly before the finish.
On the third stage of the Tour of Catalonia, the Belgian double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel and Jonas Vingegaard broke away from the field. About 500 meters from the finish, Evenepoel fell over the handlebars – and thus lost what was believed to be a certain stage victory.
The Belgian reacted calmly, staring into space with bleeding wounds on his arm and leg. Meanwhile, Vingegaard slowed down, not wanting to gain an advantage through his competitor’s fall. The Frenchman Dorian Godon sprinted to victory of the day after 159.4 kilometers from Mont-roig del Camp to Vila-seca – his second on this tour. Godon continues to lead the overall standings.
Two-time Tour de France winner Vingegaard described the fall as follows: “I don’t know what happened. He went over the handlebars. It looked a little crazy. I hope he’s okay and can continue tomorrow.” Evenepoel initiated the breakaway attempt – with an attack a good 30 kilometers from the finish. Vingegaard said: “I didn’t expect it. He left, I followed him. He was very strong.”
Evenepoel’s Red Bull teammate Florian Lipowitz held back and finished five seconds behind the field. For the Tour de France third, the first mountain finish is on Thursday: The fourth stage leads to Vallter at an altitude of 2,143 meters. The tour ends on Sunday in Barcelona.
