Mikaela Shiffrin has once again been crowned overall winner of the World Cup. Afterwards she found warm words for Emma Aicher.

Alpine skiing experienced an exciting finale for the overall victory in the World Cup on Wednesday. After the first round of the giant slalom, Emma Aicher tasted the sensation of jumping to the top at the last minute. However, the German was unable to improve in the second round and remained second behind Mikaela Shiffrin. The American raved about her young opponent after the race.

“Emma, it was a huge honor to ‘fight’ with you. Your skiing, your energy and your personality are so inspiring,” Shiffrin wrote on Instagram. She also posted a picture together with Aicher.

The American ennobled Aicher with further words: “You have a bright future ahead of you. I can hardly wait to watch you (and continue to compete against you… at least for a little longer).” This should dispel loose rumors about a possible end to his career for the time being.

Shiffrin was crowned overall World Cup winner for the sixth time on Wednesday. She has now caught up with record winner Annemarie Moser-Pröll. The Austrian also won the World Cup six times between 1971 and 1979.

For Aicher, who was 86 points behind Shiffrin in the end, second place is the best result of her young World Cup career and the best placement of a German ski racer since Maria Höfl-Riesch’s victory 15 years ago. The 22-year-old finished in 15th place last year, but celebrated her big breakthrough this season. The German all-rounder won two silver medals at the Winter Olympics.
