On the Argentine political board, the pieces that seemed immovable begin to move towards unexpected places. The most disruptive news of the last few hours came from the voice of Jose Mayanshead of the Unión por la Patria bloc of senators, who left the door open for an alliance that, until recently, belonged to the realm of political science fiction: the incorporation of Horacio Rodríguez Larreta to the Peronist army.

After having a one-hour meeting with Cristina Kirchnerthe senator from Formosa gave clear signals that the movement seeks to reconfigure itself under a maximum scheme to confront the management of Javier Milei. The strategy seems to be clear: add political volume without paying attention to the antecedents of the “wide avenue in the middle” or the old PRO.

The doctrinal wink

Asked in a radio interview about the limits of this expansion – with strict exclusions for figures such as Victoria Villarruel or Mauricio Macri -, Mayans did not hesitate when questioned by the former head of the Buenos Aires government. “Yeah”responded briefly but forcefully, and then delved into a justification based on the Justicialist tradition.

“As Perón said, the democratic system allows dialogue with everyone as long as we can agree on the direction that the Argentine people need”the legislator shot. Along the same lines, he recalled a maxim of the General to illustrate current pragmatism: “In due time, we will even talk to the communists.”

The limit of coincidence

For Mayans, the urgency of the economic and social crisis that the country is going through justifies putting aside old campaign grudges. The senator conditioned Larreta’s arrival on a programmatic agreement: “If we can agree on government action that benefits the people and that reaches the level of social justice that we want, that is what we have to discuss”.

This approach occurs in a context where Peronism is already projecting the 2027 scenario, with inmates that include figures such as Axel Kicillofbut with the premise that “no one is left over.” While Larreta maintains his low profile and his distance from the hardest wing of Together for Change, Peronism sends him a public message: the dialogue is open and the doctrine supports it.
