Liverpool is worried about qualifying for the Champions League, Arne Slot has to worry about his job. A current and a former Bundesliga coach are up for election as successors.
Liverpool FC are apparently planning to sign Xabi Alonso as their new coach. As “Sport Bild” reports, Dutchman Arne Slot’s time with the “Reds” will be over by the summer at the latest, after two years.
The main reason for the upcoming separation is apparently the sporting failure, despite investments in the squad of over 500 million euros. Among others, Liverpool brought in Alexander Isak (145 million euros), Florian Wirtz (125 million euros) and Hugo Ekitiké (95 million euros) in the summer.
Nevertheless, Liverpool is worried about qualifying for the Champions League and is currently only in fifth place in the Premier League. Due to the good positioning in the current coefficient table, that would just be enough for the “premier class”. Alonso is probably ready because Slot has not yet been able to form a team from the newly assembled squad.
The Spaniard has learned two lessons from his short time at Real Madrid and sets conditions: On the one hand, he wants to influence squad planning. In Madrid he agreed, although his requests for a new center forward and a central midfielder were rejected from the outset.
Alonso also apparently sees it as a mistake to have taken over at Real Madrid during the Club World Cup. After the semi-final defeat against Paris Saint-Germain (0:4), he was already under pressure before the official start of the season. That shouldn’t happen again in Liverpool, which is why the 44-year-old doesn’t want to start until the summer.
Alonso is said to be Liverpool’s preferred candidate and is also ready to accept a concrete offer. At the same time, the reigning English champions also have a plan B. According to “Football Insider”, Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeneß is also on the list of possible candidates.
