Suge Knight, one of hip-hop’s most defining and feared figures as co-founder and CEO of Death Row Records, admits in his upcoming memoir, Your Pain Is My Joy a “relentless” insight into his life.

According to the publisher’s description, the 352-page book offers an “open and unapologetic look into the head of the original rap kingpin.” It will be published on August 4th by Simon & Schuster imprint Gallery Books.

Knight is a central and deeply polarizing figure in hip-hop’s 50-year history. Together with Dr. Dre founded Death Row Records in 1991 and helped bring West Coast rap to the global stage with superstars like Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg. Once dubbed “the most feared man in hip-hop,” Knight was known for his intimidating presence – imposing stature, affiliation with the Compton street gang the Bloods and a well-documented history of violent altercations.

Vanilla Ice and Diddy

The book promises that Knight will not avoid the conflicts that have dogged him throughout his life, including the infamous rumor that he once held Vanilla Ice over a balcony to force him to give up the publishing rights to “Ice Ice Baby,” as well as his “fierce brawls” with his longtime rival Sean “Diddy” Combs, the founder of Bad Boy Records.

Knight also wants to revisit the events surrounding the East-West Coast beef in hip-hop and describe his own version of the night Shakur was shot on the streets of Las Vegas in September 1996 – an attack to which the rapper later succumbed.

Knight wrote his memoirs while serving a 28-year sentence for manslaughter stemming from the January 2015 death of Terry Carter, who was hit by Knight with his car.
