Mykolas Alekna had to undergo an operation.

Mykolas Alekna is sidelined for a long time. PASI LEISMA

The discus world record holder Mykolas Alekna23, was badly injured.

Alekna’s pectoral muscle completely tore last week. The world champion and reigning World Cup silver medalist was cut in Oregon, USA.

– Many thanks, doctor to James Vooswho operated on me really quickly after the injury. Big thanks to the Oregon team for helping me find the best surgeon in the country and supporting me unconditionally. I will come back stronger, Alekna wrote in connection with the picture she published from the hospital on Monday.

Alekna’s coach Mantas Jusis told more about the injury in his own in his Instagram update. According to the coach, the tendon of the ME man’s pectoral muscle tore during strength training.

The surgery went well, but the recovery will take a long time.

– The estimated recovery time is about 4–6 months. The time depends on the recovery process and the individual reaction of the body. The most important thing is that the injury is under control. We are fully focused on high-quality rehabilitation, the coach reports.

The long recovery time is bad news, because the European Championship will be held on the 10th-16th. August. So Alekna would have recovered by the end of July at the earliest. In the worst case, the races will be missed altogether.

Alekna won silver at last year’s World Championships. Sweden won the world championship Daniel Ståhl. However, the Lithuanian is the top ME man in the sport with a result of 75.56.
