On FIFA’s official resale site, prices reach even more extreme heights. A category three seat for the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey was offered for $143,750 – 41 times the original price of $3,450. Buyers and sellers each pay a fee of 15 percent to the global association.
Fifa President Gianni Infantino justified the high prices with strong demand. He said: “Especially in the USA, there is what is called dynamic pricing, which means that prices go up or down” depending on what game it is. According to FIFA, almost seven million tickets were offered for the 104 World Cup games. Infantino also said 508 million requests had been received and every game was sold out. The world association is withholding an unspecified number of tickets – they are to be sold from April.
