Change of coach? Bundesliga team targets German coach

Leverkusen will probably face another coaching change by the summer at the latest. A possible new coach has so far only coached a two-league team in Germany.
At Bayer Leverkusen, coach Kasper Hjulmand is not expected to develop the team further beyond the season. According to “Kicker”, the collaboration between the Bundesliga club and the 53-year-old is a “project without a future” despite a contract until 2027. As the pay-TV broadcaster Sky reports, however, the Dane will only have to vacate his post in the summer if the Bayer bosses find a suitable successor.
Hjulmand took over the team from Erik ten Haag in late summer 2025 after the second Bundesliga matchday. However, Leverkusen’s performance has been very fluctuating this season. Bayer is in sixth place in the Bundesliga. The gap to fourth place, which would qualify for the Champions League, is four points. The Dane and his team still have a chance of winning a title: the “Werkself” will face FC Bayern in the DFB Cup semi-finals on April 22nd.
According to Sky, Leverkusen should monitor Fabian Hürzeler’s situation as a possible successor to Hjulmand. The 33-year-old has been working at Brighton & Hove Albion in the English Premier League for two years and is under contract there until 2027. He and his team are currently in tenth place in the table. In the 2023/24 season he was promoted to the Bundesliga with FC St. Pauli. However, he is not the only candidate.
