VfB Stuttgart has taken third place in the Bundesliga. With a 5-2 win at FC Augsburg, the Swabians moved past TSG Hoffenheim, who were third before the match day. The match winner on Sunday evening in Augsburg was once again Deniz Undav, who excelled with two goals and an assist.
Stuttgart set the tone throughout the game, leading 3-0 after just 31 minutes thanks to goals from Undav (12th minute), Tiago Tomás (29th) and Nikolas Nartey (31st). Augsburg came close twice through Fabian Rieder (57′) and Anton Kade (71′), but goals from Deniz Undav (58′) and Ermedin Demirović (83′) always restored the old gap.
“We love boards, no matter how thick they are,” said Augsburg coach Manuel Baum, telling his team about the favorites in advance: “There are different drills. We have to set the drill to sharpness, we need an impact drill.”
But the Stuttgart team, who coach Sebastian Hoeneß changed to five positions compared to Thursday’s 2-0 defeat in Porto, provided no attack surface at all. Undav coolly pushed in after a cross from Angelo Stiller and an unfortunate extension from FCA keeper Finn Dahmen. VfB scored in each of its last 18 league away games – equaling the club record from 1984 and 1985.
The guests combined as they wished. Tomás had an easy time of it after a fine backheel pass from Nartey, only 110 seconds later the assist provider scored on an assist from Maximilian Mittelstädt himself.
And Augsburg? Was just running behind, but then came out of the half-time break significantly improved. Han-Noah Massengo was denied by DFB substitute keeper Alexander Nübel (47′), Cédric Zesiger missed clearly (56′) before Rieder shortened. But in direct return, Undav restored the old distance. Kade brought the hosts close a second time before Undav crowned his brilliant performance with an assist for Demirović.
