The arms company Rheinmetall expects a quick restart in the delayed construction of the F126 frigates for the navy.

“We assume that we will get the F126 frigate under contract as a general contractor in the summer,” said Tim Wagner, head of the newly created Maritime Systems Division at Rheinmetall, to “Welt am Sonntag”. “We want to accelerate lead times and deliver the first of the six planned frigates in the second half of 2031.” Discussions were ongoing with the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Bundeswehr.

At the beginning of April, Rheinmetall took over the NVL naval shipyard division of the Bremen-based Lürssen Group for 1.5 billion euros. Its center is the Hamburg shipyard Blohm+Voss. The general contractor for the construction of the F126 was originally the Dutch company Damen Naval in Vlissingen. However, Damen Naval – with German shipyards as subcontractors – cannot produce the ships on time; the program is currently around four years behind schedule.

The construction of six F126s planned for around ten billion euros is the German Navy’s largest new construction program to date. The ships are primarily specialized in submarine hunting. The takeover by Rheinmetall as general contractor is one of two options that the Ministry of Defense is currently pursuing. Alternatively, the Kiel-based naval shipbuilder TKMS thyssenkrupp Marine Systems is preparing to build smaller Meko A-200 DEU frigates.
