The cabinet is implementing the previously made agreement with regard to the student loan system compensation. A broad majority in Parliament previously requested this, which is why the Cabinet has decided to send the necessary legislative amendment to the House of Representatives.
Minister Letschert of Education, Culture and Science: ”This cabinet wants to improve the financial position of students. This also applies to former students. It is unfortunate for students who studied without a basic grant that the basic grant returned so soon after it was abolished.”
The additional compensation is €44.50 for every month that a student was entitled to a performance-related grant within the loan system. For 4 years of study, this can amount to a total amount of € 2136.00. The proposal to parliament is that the compensation will be granted from April 2027. Most former students do not have to apply for the allowance. Everyone who received the previous compensation will automatically receive the new compensation from DUO.
The compensation will be offset against any student debt. If there is no or a lower debt, the (remaining) amount will be paid out immediately. The financial position of current students also receives attention from this cabinet, as stated in the coalition agreement. The elaboration of these plans is currently taking place.
