Six years after the Joshua Bassett triangle feud, Olivia Rodrigo explains in a Vogue interview how things stand between her and Sabrina Carpenter today.
The times of hostility are over. Olivia Rodrigo spoke about her relationship with Sabrina Carpenter in an interview with Vogue magazine.
The two pop stars were known as arch enemies for a long time. A few years ago, rumors circulated that she was in a love triangle with actor Joshua Bassett.
Now Rodrigo commented on Carpenter in an interview with the British edition of “Vogue”. “I think she’s great. I’m also really happy about all her successes. I love the album she put out.” And further: “It’s all good. I’ve spoken to her many times.” It sounds like the two have put their feud aside. After all, the entire drama happened six years ago – Olivia Rodrigo was 17 at the time and Sabrina Carpenter was 20.
The backstory
Singer Olivia Rodrigo met Bassett on the set of the Disney production “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”. The two, who were still teenagers at the time, are said to have dated. When their relationship ended, Rodrigo wrote her breakthrough single, “Drivers License.” The song is about her breakup with Joshua Bassett. He is said to have already been in a romantic relationship with Sabrina Carpenter at the time of publication.
Rodrigo sings in her debut single: “You’re probably with that blonde girl, who always made me doubt, she’s so much older than me, she’s everything I’m insecure about.”
Carpenter, who is a few years older, responded with the song “Skin.” In it she wrote: “I’m happy and you hate it… I wish you knew that even you can’t get under my skin if I don’t let you in.”
This sparked a dispute between the two pop stars. The fans of both artists in particular fueled the rivalry, so that the conflict also extended to the two Disney stars’ further releases.
Rodrigo, now 23, admitted that there was a lot of pressure on her at the time and that the argument was also due to her young age: “Sometimes I meet a 17 or 18 year old these days and think to myself: ‘Wow, you’re still such a child.’ I can’t believe people were so mean to me.” And: “I had just gone through a breakup, was working full time, producing [Sour]went to high school and took about three AP courses. When I look back I always think, ‘Wow, life will never be as hard as it was when I was 17.’”

Since 2020, both artists have experienced a significant career boost. Carpenter made it into the charts in 2024 with her album “Short n’ Sweet” and won three Grammys in 2025. Olivia Rodrigo already triumphed in 2022 and also won three awards for her debut LP. Now she is releasing her third studio album, which according to many reports will once again contain many songs about love. An exact release date has not yet been set.
Rodrigo’s statement is the first public statement on the relationship between the two singers. Back in 2025, they were spotted chatting and hugging at the Grammys. The friendship between the two women has apparently overcome jealousy over a man.
