The fact that Avalon Emerson has a remarkable range has already become clear to everyone who has followed her development into one of the most prominent DJs in the world over the past few years. When the techno producer released the album AVALON EMERSON & THE CHARM in 2023, critics and fans were still amazed at the stylish dream pop that was on offer, in which you could hear Emerson’s love for the Cocteau Twins.
And because it was so nice, she is now delivering her second hit as a singer/songwriter with WRITTEN INTO CHANGES. The ten tracks about change and transience sound a little less dreamy, but still enchanting. “The best era in music was from 1987 to 1994,” she says, and you can hear that on the record. The breakbeat-heavy band sound of “Eden” is reminiscent of Madchester or dance rock from that era – like Emerson in the music video, you would like to get in the car and drive along country roads.
“Wooden Star” ties in with their electronic side, but rather as a soundtrack for the cinema rather than for the club. “Happy Birthday” combines danceability with lyrical depth and greets you with a saxophone from the 80s. She demonstrates her sense of humor as a songwriter in “How Dare This Beer” when she sinks into self-pity – but with cold beer in a warm bed. Emerson says she found her voice on this album, meaning more confidence in her singing – but it can be applied to the entire album.
