It is starting to become a nice soap, the position below the bar at PSV. Goalkeeper Joël Drommel again made two errors last weekend. He spoke to Roger Schmidt after the game, who in turn declined to say who would be goalkeeper at the press conference for the European game against Leicester City.
“We’ll see who is under the bar on Thursday”, Schmidt was very secretive when he was asked during the press interview about the place under the bar. “There is always a big topic made of changing a goalkeeper. But in my view it is no different than when you change a player. It’s part of football”
The German coach did speak with the PSV goalie. “Joel is very disappointed. It was a big game for him on Saturday against his old club FC Twente. At those moments he wants to play top but that didn’t happen. He will have to be mentally strong, that is also part of the goalkeeping profession.”
From the words of Schmidt in Leicester you could almost conclude that Drommel will be passed tomorrow for the second time this season. But when it came to the goalkeepers, the coach said he never announced the starting line-up. But when Cody Gakpo comes up, the German said he was probably going to start.
The trainer spoke highly of Leicester City. “Individually, Leicester City is better. We will have to be the best team if we want to get a good result here.”
What is a good result according to the head coach? “We always want to win, but whether that is possible remains to be seen. We’re just going to play and then we’ll see what the result is.”
When he continues to talk about the qualities of the English club, he mainly mentions the vanguard. “At the front, the team has a lot of quality and, above all, speed. We will have to keep them far from our goal. Of course Leicester also has weaknesses, but I won’t name them.”
Finally, the press conference was about the Conference League in general. Roger Schmidt is excited about the competition. “When it was introduced I wondered what use it was. But now that we’re in the quarterfinals, it’s starting to get really fun. It would be nice if we make it to the next rounds. To win? That would be totally special. But first tomorrow.”
