BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – CSU boss Markus Söder remains extremely critical of a possible social media ban for young people. Söder said on the broadcaster ntv that he was open to discussing possible measures for the protection of minors. At the same time, he emphasized: “I hear and read in Australia that this big social media ban will lead to what? Nothing at all, because everything can be circumvented.” There are already age restrictions on social media. “Why doesn’t it work? Because the parents don’t make sure of it.”
At the same time, Bavaria’s Prime Minister made a comparison: “And you also have to see one thing: everyone wants you to vote younger, to lower the criminal responsibility,” he said and added: but “social media is up.” He added: “I’m cautious about it.”
Söder insists on a concrete technical solution
The debate about bans and restrictions has also become increasingly intense in Germany since Australia became the first country to introduce a social media ban for under-16s in December. Söder had already expressed his opposition last year and argued that a ban would make Tiktok, Instagram and Co. even more interesting for young people and children.
The sister party CDU decided at its party conference in February to introduce a minimum age of 14 for social media such as Tiktok and Instagram to protect children and young people.
The party conference resolution does not contain any suggestion as to how this can be implemented technically, said Söder. “I would like to see whether there is a concrete technical proposal, not just some blah blah: “we have to, we should”.”/thn/DP/jha
