For more than three decades, Quentin Tarantino has given world cinema decisive impulses – with style-defining films such as “Reservoir Dogs”, “Pulp Fiction” and most recently “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”. Most recently, personal moves followed towards Israel, where his family (partly) lives.

West End tabloid comedy

Now the director seems to be aiming for new territory: According to reports from various UK media, Tarantino is working on his first stage play, which is expected to premiere in London’s West End theater district in early 2027.

The production is described as an “old-fashioned British farce” – a classic British tabloid comedy in the style of “Noises Off” conceived by playwright Michael Frayn in the early 1980s.

The soon-to-be 63-year-old (March 27) is said not only to have written the play, but also to direct it himself. A specific venue has not yet been determined, but due to its variety of stages, London’s West End is considered the set.

Tarantino spoke publicly about it for the first time in early 2025. At the time he explained in an interview: “If you want to know what I’m currently working on: a play. Very likely the next project I realize.”

Springboard to the last film?

The project could also play a strategic role in Tarantino’s hotly debated career plan. The director has repeatedly emphasized that he wants to end his filmography after his tenth feature film. If the play is successful, it could possibly become his farewell film: “If it’s a fiasco, of course I won’t do anything with it. But what if it’s a big hit? Then it could become my last film,” he said.

Fincher is filming Tarantino’s story

While Tarantino himself is not currently behind the camera, his name remains present in cinema. A sequel to “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” is already in the works – but directed by his colleague David Fincher (63). The film with the working title “The Adventures of Cliff Booth” brings Brad Pitt back in the role of stuntman Cliff Booth and is based on a script by Tarantino. The release is still planned for 2026 on Netflix.

The ensemble includes, among others, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Timothy Olyphant and Scott Caan. Leonardo DiCaprio, however, is unlikely to return as Weird actor Rick Dalton.

His own farewell project remains unclear

At the same time, Tarantino’s own farewell project remained in the dark for a long time. His originally planned tenth work “The Movie Critic” was canceled until further notice after several rounds of scripting and delays.

Whether Tarantino’s London theater comedy actually paves the way to his final film remains to be seen. The only thing that is certain is that even if he turns his back on the cinema at some point, Tarantino doesn’t seem to be done telling great stories yet.
