And that must continue to exist here in the future. His deputy Mike Rösler added: “Let us all fight together so that after December 31, 2030 we still have a Volkswagen logo on the gate here and we still build Volkswagen products here.”
Recently, a report about another savings program with a volume of around 60 billion euros at Volkswagen caused a stir. According to “Manager Magazin”, costs are expected to fall by 20 percent by 2028. The reason for the move is sluggish sales in China and US tariffs. The collective agreement from the end of 2024 provides for 35,000 jobs to be cut nationwide in a socially acceptable manner by 2030. To this end, plant closures were ruled out.
1,200 jobs cut
As a result, the Zwickau car factory also had to give up. According to the information, 1,200 jobs have been lost since then – due to age-related departures, termination agreements and because fixed-term contracts were not extended. Cars are now only built in two shifts in Zwickau instead of the previous three. In the coming years, the factory will also have to sell several models to other locations.
In return, Zwickau will receive the new circular economy business area. From 2030 onwards, up to 15,000 vehicles will be reconditioned or dismantled for customers every year, depending on their condition, in order to reuse individual components, for example for used cars, or to recover raw materials. We are talking about around 1,000 jobs that will be secured in this way.

In addition to the traditionally strong IG Metall, two other lists are competing for the 35 places.
