Hungarian prime minister invites Putin to peace talks

Viktor Orban said that the Russian president reacted positively to this proposal, but said that certain conditions must be met.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that during a telephone conversation with Vladimir Putin, he suggested that the Russian president hold peace talks in Hungary with the participation of not only Vladimir Zelensky, but also French President Emmanuel Macron. According to Orban, Putin’s response was positive, but he indicated that there must be certain conditions for this.

Orban also said that during the conversation he offered Putin to establish a ceasefire in Ukraine, reports Reuters.

The Hungarian prime minister also said that Budapest is ready to agree to pay for Russian gas in rubles.

The Kremlin press service has so far published a message about Orban’s conversation with Putin.

Orban ranked Zelensky among his opponents

Orban’s Fidesz party won parliamentary elections in Hungary last weekend. The coalition with the Christian Democratic People’s Party secured the support of 68% of the voters and secured a constitutional majority.

Prior to the start of the special operation in Ukraine, polls showed that Orban’s party did not have a serious advantage over the opposition. However, after the start of a special military operation, the rating began to grow. At the same time, Orban took a position that ran counter to the official line of the EU: on the one hand, he joined the sanctions against Russia, on the other hand, he announced his readiness to veto them if they affected the energy sector, and also repeatedly announced his refusal supply weapons to Ukraine and transport them through Hungary.
