Guillermo Francella spoke about the situation that the country’s audiovisual industry is going through and described a critical scenario for actors, technicians and producers. He did it in a television interview with the program Pure Showwhich is broadcast by El Trece, where he was consulted by the present of local cinema and television. In this context, the protagonist of Homo Argentum maintained that the labor outlook in the sector is “desolate” due to the drop in productions and the financing crisis that the audiovisual system is going through.
During the report, the actor was direct when describing the lack of job opportunities in the sector. “There is no work. There is no fiction. It is not filmed“, he stated when referring to the paralysis of audiovisual production. The artist pointed out that this situation not only affects established figures but also new performers and technical workers in the industry. In another section of the dialogue, Francella expanded his view and recalled how the television system worked when he began his career. “When I started there were unitaries, daily strips, there was always a lot of work“, he explained. And he contrasted that period with the present: “Today there is no filming and open television practically disappeared”.
Francella also linked this crisis to her own family, since her two children are dedicated to acting. “My two children are actors and they express it to me all the time: the outlook is bleak.“, he said when referring to the lack of projects in film and television. The actor stressed that the problem goes beyond the political discussion: “Beyond the crack, there is a reality: there is no work”.
In the same interview, the interpreter referred to the situation of the National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts (INCAA) and proposed that the organization should maintain its specific financing scheme to support national production. In this way, the protagonist of “My Masterpiece” expressed his concern about the reforms that affect the entity and warned that the weakening of the organization directly impacts the number of films and series made in the country.
The actor’s statements become more relevant in a context of restructuring of the organization that currently leads Carlos Pirovano. The management promoted by the libertarian government seeks to reformulate the operation of the INCAA with a spending reduction scheme, review of subsidies and changes in the financing mechanisms of Argentine cinema. Among the measures discussed are the reorganization of production support programs and modifications to the institute’s administrative structure, with the official argument of reducing costs that deepened the decline in audiovisual activity.
Francella’s recent opinions also contrast with previous statements he had made about Javier Milei’s government. After the presidential inauguration in 2023, the actor had expressed positive expectations about the new economic and social direction of the country and asked to “give the government time” to implement its reforms. As the months passed, however, the visible deterioration of audiovisual activity made the actor change his mind and publicly express his concern about the impact that economic policies have on the sector.
In parallel to this debate, Francella’s name has been linked to the political agenda due to the film’s journey. Homo Argentumdirected by Mariano Cohn and Gastón Duprat. Released in 2025, the feature film presents sixteen satirical stories starring the actor and that seek to portray the contradictions of contemporary Argentine society.
The film also had a particular chapter in the political sphere. President Milei organized private screenings of the film for officials and collaborators at the Quinta de Olivos presidential residence and used it as an example within what he calls his “cultural battle.” In this context, the president publicly praised the work and maintained that the film exposes what he considers contradictions of progressivism in Argentine society.
While Homo Argentum became a box office phenomenon and generated intense public discussions, now Francella himself insists that the central discussion today involves another problem: the very survival of the industry. In the actor’s words, the diagnosis is simple and forceful: “There is no work today, it’s the truth”.
