Mourning for Georg Koch: The former goalkeeper died at the age of just 54 after a serious illness. This was announced, among other things, by his former club Fortuna Düsseldorf. “We are in deep sadness. Koch suffered from pancreatic cancer. He was diagnosed with this in 2023, and a year later he made it public in an interview with “Bild”. “The whole mess was discovered during a routine examination. I wasn’t feeling so well before and my blood values were noticeably bad,” Koch said at the time. “The disease is incurable, I will die. But God has not yet decided when the good Lord will take me.” The Bergisch Gladbach native was previously team manager at Viktoria Köln until May 2023.
During his playing days, in addition to Fortuna, he also played for 1. FC Kaiserslautern, MSV Duisburg, Arminia Bielefeld, Dinamo Zagreb, SpVgg Erkenschwick, Energie Cottbus, Rapid Wien and PSV Eindhoven. There are 213 games in the Bundesliga and 165 appearances in the 2nd league.
