Former track and field athlete Ari Salin has died, says STT. The sad news for STT is confirmed by the former head of coaching and training of the Sports Confederation Antti Lanamäki.

Salin died of a long-term illness at the age of 79 on Wednesday.

Competing in hurdles and sprints, Salin won three Finnish championships in the 110-meter hurdles, four in the 400-meter hurdles and one in the relay.

Salin was part of the relay team at the Munich Olympics in 1972, where Finland finished sixth with a Finnish record time of 3:01.12. In the same year, he ran the Finnish record of 49.5 for the 400 meters at the time.

At the 1971 European Championships in Helsinki, Salin finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles.

Ari Salin’s spouse is former sprinter Riitta Salin, who won the 1974 EC gold in Rome in the 400 meters and silver in the relay.
