International debut, a goal and lots of praise: Werder Bremen’s Larissa Mühlhaus experienced a little football fairytale in Dresden. In the DFB women’s 5-0 win against Slovenia, she immediately revived the competition in the German offensive.

Slightly nervous, but with a broad smile, Larissa Mühlhaus stepped in front of the microphones and spoke in a bit of disbelief about her dream debut for the DFB women. “It’s unbelievable, I can’t put it into words. I have to process everything first. There were a lot of emotions,” said the 23-year-old striker in an ARD interview about her first appearance and goal for the German footballers in Tuesday’s huge win against Slovenia.

“I had goosebumps the whole time I was on the bench watching. Because I only know that from watching them on TV when they play.”

Being part of the DFB team is a “bit unrealistic,” admitted the Werder Bremen attacker after the successful start to the World Cup qualification. “It feels like a dream. And it has just come true.”

Anyway, with this debut: coming on as a substitute at halftime, the Hamburg native scored acrobatically to make it 4-0 a little later. “I had goosebumps the whole time I was on the bench watching. Because I only know that from watching them on TV when they play.”

Mühlhaus increases competition

Against overwhelmed Slovenians, Bremen’s Bundesliga top scorer (10 goals in 17 games) increased the competition on the German offensive. Next to Mühlhaus, who was nominated for the injured Hoffenheim player Selina Cerciand the lively starting eleven debutante Shekiera Martinez from West Ham United was also able to get a chance to play Lea Schüller, who had almost been written off. After coming on as a substitute, she thanked her with her 55th goal in her 83rd international match.

Unbridled will and joy in football

Mühlhaus will only be in their first international match if they score a goal. But the woman from Bremen could embody what the DFB team has been lacking recently. “She simply enjoys football, would like to score ten goals in every game and also wants to take responsibility,” said ARD expert Almuth Schult. “When she scored, you could see how badly she wanted this goal. She threw everything she had into it. Maybe this irrepressible will is what was missing for a long time.”

Wück: “We can be very happy with her”

Christian Wück also did not spare his praise for the 23-year-old. “She has talent, plays incredibly physically, has done a lot of things right and rewarded herself,” said the national coach, who expects even more from Mühlhaus.

“She has talent, she did a lot of things right, she rewarded herself.”

National coach Wück about Mühlhaus

“In training she showed what technical skills she has with her left and right. She missed something today,” said Wück, who didn’t want to be too strict: “It was her first game, she scores, we can be very happy with her. And we have one more alternative, that’s what matters.”

Maybe again for Saturday. Then the DFB team goes to Stavanger against Norway (6 p.m., in the audio live stream) continue with the second qualifying game.
