The change at the New York Giants began long ago with the new head coach John Harbaugh. Now the NFL team is also turning a new page in terms of player personnel and is parting ways with one of the leading players.
As “ESPN” reports, among others, the Giants are releasing middle linebacker Bobby Okereke and thereby securing nine million dollars in fresh cap space. This is sorely needed because with a cap space of around two million dollars at the beginning of the week, the G-Men would be relatively incapable of action when they enter free agency next week.
Nonetheless, Okerere’s dismissal leaves a big void. In addition to his role on the field, the inside linebacker was also one of the team captains. However, the team with him was the second-worst team in run defense last year and allowed 145.3 rushing yards per game.
Okereke injured his back in 2024 and missed much of the season. Since then, he has not been able to match the performances he showed, for example, in his first year with the Giants after moving from Indianapolis to the Big Apple in 2023.

Of course, the New York Giants now have to look for a suitable replacement. And if you look at the past of new coach John Harbaugh, you will be careful about who you sign.
During his time in Baltimore, Harbaugh had some quality inside linebackers – Ray Lewis, CJ Mosley, Patrick Queen and Roquan Smith – leading his defense.
Harbaugh’s comments at the NFL Combine last week reinforced his priorities.
“Inside linebacker isn’t always considered an important position, but without an inside linebacker tackling up the middle, you can’t stop the run, right? That’s impossible,” Harbaugh said. “So that makes this position pretty important.”
