Until last spring, Sara’s family lived a very normal everyday life. Then everything changed. Sara’s 10-year-old daughter had to be hospitalized. The mother describes her child as a sensitive worrier type. Suddenly, however, more fears started to appear, and anxiety increased strongly and very quickly.
– It spilled over in every direction, Sara recalls Terhi Romon directing At the heart of the matter – in the short documentary OCD – The Invisible Storm.
First, Sara’s daughter had to check the school backpack endlessly. Surely all the necessary books were included?
– After five minutes, however, there was a suspicion that a book was missing.

Then the daughter started to fear possible poisons. Had someone been smoking somewhere?
– That hysteria made us seek help. The one when it felt like we couldn’t go to school there anymore.
The daughter was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder, or OCD. Even though help was needed and it was received, it was still a hard place for the mother to have her daughter stay in the ward.
– The worst moment was when the girl stayed in the ward, Sara says now, even though the daughter herself also wanted ward treatment.
At first the symptoms got worse.
– The poisons were very strongly present. He speculated about the department’s food, that they were poisoned. Is it safe to shower? Are there any dangers? When she came to practice at home, the fears came home, Sara says.

The daughter, who remains nameless and faceless in the documentary, also remembers her time in the ward on TV.
– I hurt adults a bit, when I was worried too much. I had to do something bad in the evenings. My OCD forced me.
In addition to Sara and her daughter, adult Kaisla Maria, whose OCD was treated for 11 years as depression, shares her own story.
