André Trindade scores the decisive goal for Wolverhampton in the 94th minute and condemns Slot’s team. However, Brentford’s European dream continues, drawing at Bournemouth
Rejected. Liverpool wanted to pass the grown-up test, at least momentarily catch up with Manchester United and Aston Villa, both playing on the 29th matchday on Wednesday, in third place. Instead, the Reds left Wolverhampton with a sensational defeat, a 2-1 which the bottom of the table made a reality in the 94th minute with André’s shot from the edge of the area deflected unstoppably into his own goal by Joe Gomez. For Wolves, last by a foot and a half in the Championship, it means two victories in a row for the first time in the season, both against the top 5 as they prevailed over Aston Villa on Friday. For Liverpool it is such a heavy defeat that the idea of having found a goal from Mo Salah in the Premier League for the first time since November 1st makes it less bitter.
THE KEYS
—
The Reds saw the ghosts of the worst period of their season again, despite having appeared in Wolverhampton with an open streak of 4 victories. Without ideas, unable to undermine the home defense, organized but not impenetrable, inattentive in defense given that Rodrigo Gomes’ opener in the 78th minute came on the counterattack and the winning goal was also favored by an error by Alisson. It’s difficult to find something that worked for Liverpool: in attack it went so badly that even Hugo Ekitike failed; in the middle Dominik Szoboszlai was not up to his role as untouchable and behind Virgil Van Dijk he had important responsibility for Wolves’ opening goal. Liverpool in the last 4 games, victories and 10 goals scored, would not have had any problems. The Molineux team simply wasn’t up to par, thanks also to the determination of Wolves who decided they no longer wanted to make a fool of themselves between now and the end of the season, despite finishing last place. Liverpool’s goal in the Premier League for the end of the season remains to qualify for the next Champions League, but after so many positive signs this one from Wolverhampton is a very bad step backwards. One that Slot will have to mull over quickly: Liverpool return to Molineux on Friday, this time in the FA Cup round of 16.
THE OTHERS
—
Brentford continue their European dream with a 0-0 draw at Bournemouth which keeps the Bees in seventh place with 44 points. For the Cherries, 9th useful result in a row but third consecutive draw and only one victory in the last five. Everton also dreams of Europe, now 8th after the 2-0 home win over Burnley which means their second success in a row and 43 points. Burnley, with their second consecutive defeat, continue second to last with a foot and a half in the Championship. A penalty from Diarra in the 70th minute gave Sunderland the victory they had been waiting for for four rounds: the 1-0 in Leeds took the Black Cats to 40 and left Farke’s team on 31 after the second defeat in a row.
