A make-up artist appeared at the César Awards dressed as Jim Carrey – but the real star was there. What’s behind the conspiracy theory.
On Sunday, February 26, 2026, the Cesar Awards were presented in Paris. The French film prize was awarded for the 51st time, and actor and comedian Jim Carrey was also pleased to receive an award: he received the honorary award. As a result, speculation circulated online as to whether he was even present – now there is clarity.
Jim Carrey came to the ceremony in person
After the awards were handed out, a conspiracy theory of sorts began circulating online that the actor had sent a look-alike to the event. This was based on Jim Carrey’s supposedly significantly changed appearance. See here:
Now it is clear: Jim Carrey was there. The organizers confirmed this. He accepted the honorary award that Julia Roberts had won the previous year and also gave a speech. The honor celebrated his roles in the films “The Mask” and “The Truman Show.”
Make-up artist speaks out
For his participation, the mime was surrounded by his family, who accompanied him to the ceremony. After theories about a double began circulating, make-up artist Alexis Stone also spoke out via Instagram. The make-up artist is known for impressive transformations and actually attended the Cesar Awards ceremony in Paris dressed as Jim Carrey. This is where some of the theories came from.
“Historical moment”
So it can actually be said that a Jim Carrey lookalike was at the event, but did not replace him. The main organizer of the ceremony, Gregory Coulier, spoke of a “historic moment” when the 64-year-old gave his speech. He also commented on the rumors circulating online to Variety: “Jim Carrey’s visit had been planned since this summer. From the beginning, he was very touched by the Academy’s invitation. We had ongoing, constructive conversations for eight months. He worked on his speech in French for months and asked me about the exact pronunciation of certain words.”
He added: “He came with his partner, his daughter, his grandson and twelve close friends and family members. His long-time PR manager accompanied him. His old friend Michel Gondry, with whom he had made a film and two series, was also there and they were both very happy to see each other again. For me it is completely irrelevant. I just remember his generosity, his kindness, his kindness and his elegance.”
Jim Carrey’s speech
In his speech, which he delivered in French, Carrey spoke about his French roots and said: “About 300 years ago, my great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather Marc-François Carré was born in France, in Saint-Malo.” He also paid tribute to his father, who, as he said, “instilled in him the values of love, generosity and laughter.”
