The steel monument was presented this morning in Torhout. It has the shape of a winged Hussar (mounted soldier), the emblem of the armored division. Lieven Vandecaveye, VTI Torhout teacher: We made a monument in two parts. A base plate representing a wheel, so there is a bit of movement in the monument, and then a top plate. We went to the municipality of Lichtervelde with that proposal. We received approval immediately. Once everything was completely drawn out, the pieces were laser cut and we folded and welded everything together ourselves.”

Important

On April 26, the 150-kilogram monument will be given its final place in Lichtervelde. Dirk Verbeke, chairman of the Belgian Association of the 1st Polish Armored Division: “The monument is very important to us. It is a lasting memory of the Polish soldiers who also liberated Lichtervelde at the beginning of September.”
