A record 400,000 people attended Shakira’s free concert at the Zócalo in Mexico City. As the last stop of the “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” tour in the country, the musician made the show like a homecoming of sorts. “Today I feel a mix of excitement, nostalgia and gratitude. Today is our last day here in Mexico, my home,” Shakira told the audience. “There is definitely no better reunion than that of a little she-wolf and her Mexican pack here today at the Zócalo. We are one forever.”

Shakira plans to repeat

The concert marked the largest gathering of visitors to date at the Zócalo, according to the Mexico City Tourism Secretariat. “A new record number of visitors envelopes the capital’s Zócalo, the most special stage in Mexico City,” the authority said on social media. “Four hundred thousand hearts beat, moved and sang as one at Shakira’s magnificent concert in the historic center of the capital. Long live the greatness of our city and its stages to enjoy various artistic expressions!”

Shakira kicked off her Mexico shows on February 21st in Tuxtla Gutiérrez. This was followed by an appearance in Mérida on February 24th and at the GNP Seguros Stadium in Mexico City on February 27th. The Zócalo concert concludes this leg before she heads to Asia for the final leg of the tour. “This is a love and friendship story that I have with Mexico that cannot be compared to anything,” Shakira said on stage. “Thank you for all the enthusiasm, all the joy you made me feel.”

Shakira last played at the Zócalo almost two decades ago. “¡México lindo! Do you remember in 2007 when I sang for you at the Zócalo? Today I want to tell you that this experience will happen again,” Shakira wrote on social media when announcing the free concert. “You have given me so, so much, and I hope I can give you back some of that love you gave me.”
