Michael Stipe on REM’s early influences

Michael Stipe suggests in an interview with the US edition of Rolling Stone that REM’s early musical influences ranged from the B-52’s to Patti Smith.

Both then became part of the band’s work: Kate Pierson from the B-52’s can be heard on several songs from “Out Of Time” (1991), without Patti Smith “E-Bow The Letter” from “New Adventures In Hi-Fi” (1996) would hardly be conceivable. The singer can also be heard on the last full song from the last REM record, “Collapse Into Now” (2011): “Blue”.

Stipe: “The music that inspired the kind of cartoon music I grew up with as a kid in the ’60s was the same music that influenced the Ramones and Patti Smith.”
