President Trump addresses the press at the White House

Reuters

According to US President Donald Trump, last weekend was “the last good chance” to attack Iran and prevent the country from developing a nuclear weapon. He said this on Monday at a ceremony for veterans who received a high award.

On that occasion, Trump, following Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, discussed the goals that would justify the large-scale US-Israeli attacks on Iran. It was the first time he spoke in public since the attacks began last Saturday. He did not answer questions from journalists.

Iran has three sites in use where uranium can be enriched. This technology could be used to produce nuclear weapons, but Trump’s claim that the Iranians could build such a bomb within days is disputed.

The director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, said in an email on Monday press conference that he does not see a “structured program” in Iran for the development of a nuclear weapon. He emphasized that Iran is insufficiently transparent towards the atomic agency about its nuclear ambitions.

According to The New York Times Intelligence services also see no evidence that Iran is actively attempting to resume uranium enrichment, or that it is working on a nuclear bomb. The already enriched uranium is deep underground after the Israeli-American attacks in June last year.

It was remarkable that the American president did not mention a change in the Iranian regime in his speech, which he did talk about in his pre-recorded video message on Saturday. Since Saturday, the White House and the Pentagon have offered varying explanations about the need for the attack.
