THEThe March sky is preparing to offer one of the most evocative astronomical shows of 2026. On Tuesday 3 March, the Moon will be the protagonist of a total eclipsewhich will dye it a deep brownish red, transforming it into what is called Blood Moon. Despite the global appeal of the event, astronomical geography imposes limits: on this occasion, in fact, Italy will find itself in the gray area as regards direct observation. However, this detail will not be an insurmountable obstacle for enthusiasts. In fact, it will still be possible to watch the show in real time.

Blood Moon: The great total eclipse of March 3

The phenomenon of the eclipse is nothing other than a precise cosmic connection that represents one of the moments of maximum mechanical harmony of our solar system. It manifests itself at the exact moment the Earthmoving along its orbit, finds itself in such a position to stand like an immense shield between the star and its natural satellite. In this perfect geometric configuration, our planet intercepts the sun’s rays, projecting a majestic cone of shadow into deep space. When the Moon passes entirely through this volume of darknessis completely enveloped by it, giving rise to a visual metamorphosis that transforms the familiar silvery night light into a play of lights and colors of rare beauty.

The scientific mystery behind the color red

The question that arises spontaneously concerns the particular color that the Moon takes on during the totality phase. During a total eclipse, the satellite does not disappear into the deep darkness of space, but is suffused with a hue that shifts from copper to dark red. This happens because the Earth’s atmosphere acts as a sort of lens: While it blocks most sunlight, it allows in red rayswhich have a longer wavelength, to bend and reach the lunar surface. This is the same physical principle that colors the sky red during a sunset. In practice, the Moon receives the light of all the Earth’s sunsets and sunrises simultaneously projected onto its soil, creating a visual effect that has continued to enchant humanity for millennia.

Even if Italy will remain in the shadows for direct observation, the charm of the Blood Moon will be accessible to all thanks to technology. (Getty Images)

The times of the eclipse and the Blood Moon

Although, as mentioned, in Italy the Moon will rise only around 6.15pm, when the phenomenon will be over, the event can be followed in full thanks to digital transmission technologies. The moment of maximum lunar fullness is scheduled for 12:38 pm Italian time. The salient phases will develop according to a precise calendar expressed in Utc, Coordinated universal timethe coordinated universal time that serves as an international reference for synchronizing clocks around the world):

  • entrance in dim light: at 09:44, when the lightest darkening begins
  • start of total phase: at 12:04, the moment in which the lunar disk is entirely covered by the Earth’s shadow
  • maximum of the eclipse: at 12:33, the peak of the red color
  • definitive exit: the phenomenon will completely end around 3.23pm.

The live streaming

The show will be broadcast in its entirety via live streaming starting from 9.30 am Italian time. The reference point for viewing will be the official channel of Virtual telescope project. The images will be accompanied by commentary from astrophysicist Gianluca Masi, who will guide the public through the different phases of lunar coloration.

The routes of the moon: where to look towards the sky

If Mediterranean Europe cannot enjoy naked eye observation, other parts of the world will have a privileged position. The total phase will be best visible from the Far East, with Japan and Siberia in the front rowas well as much of Australia and the eastern regions of North America. The Union of Italian amateur astronomers, the national association that brings together sky enthusiasts and scholars, however, underlines that this event remains one of the most important moments of the astronomical calendar of 2026. Therefore, even if mediated by a screen, the observation of Blood Moon it’s not to be missed.
