In Arto Bryggare’s opinion, Saga Vannisen should not go to the World Championships in Poland to defend his world championship.

A Finnish connoisseur Saga Vannisen it’s not worth going to the World Indoor Championships in March. That’s the opinion of Iltalehti’s athletics expert Arto Bryggare.

– Surely he shouldn’t go there, but take a break, gather strength and aim for the summer, Bryggare says.

Vanninen is the defending pentathlon world champion. However, it has been difficult for him in the current season.

A disappointed Vanninen competed in Espoo’s indoor games over the weekend in four individual sports. He did not give interviews after one, but left the place by different routes than the other contestants.

Vanninen jumped a length of 602 in Espoo and pushed the ball 14.67 meters. In the high hurdles, he clocked a time of 8.43 seconds and in the high jump he crossed the bar with a height of 168.

– Saga’s level of results has been weak for him. The reason could be health if he has had a cold, like many others this winter. Or if you’ve been training too hard, it will show, Bryggare analysed.

– I hope from the bottom of my heart that it hasn’t been pulled too hard. The situation is a bit worrying.

Vanninen clocked his record of 25.04 in the 200 meters in the current indoor season.

In the high jump, Vanninen’s best result of the current indoor season is 170 (record 181), in the long jump 602 (record indoors 652, outdoors 649) and in the 60-meter hurdles 8.43 seconds (8.19).

– The goal was to be in better shape. The Rhine load is no longer below. I can’t really say why it doesn’t work. Seats intact, Vanninen communicated between SUL’s spokesperson after the SM halls.

Hard condition and surprising

The women’s 3,000 meters race was the place to be on Sunday.

Having opened and at the same time ended his reign Ilona Mononen won gold in his record time of 8:55.17. Competed for the second time after a persistent leg injury Nathalie Blomqvist was another.

– It was a great opening. Ilona Mononen is in great shape and in a very promising stroke. Nathalie’s return after the cycle of injuries was also very promising, Bryggare analyzed.

– Great race and good fight. Promise them both a good spring if they stay healthy.

Bryggare also praises the weekend of 22-year-old Elias Mäkikoko. The man from the Jyväskylä Field Athletes ran his record 48.79 in the 400 meters and was fourth.

In the 200 meters, he won the bronze medal at the World Championships and set a record of 21.59.

– He is a former parkour athlete who has only practiced athletics for a year. Huge talent! I hope that development continues.

Bryggare says that Mäkikoko’s results will improve even more in the summer.
