Leipzig initially had a hard time against Hamburger SV, but then turned the game around. The Champions League places remain within reach.
RB Leipzig celebrated an important victory in the fight for the Champions League places in the Bundesliga. After trailing 0-1, Leipzig won the game at Hamburger SV 2-1 on Sunday evening. Fábio Vieira initially gave HSV the lead in the 22nd minute, but Rômulo (36th minute) equalized before the break. Shortly after the restart, Yan Diomande put Rasenballsport in the front (50th). Although Rômulo missed a hand penalty in the 62nd minute, Hamburg could no longer use it to equalize.
Ole Werner’s team inflicted their first home defeat on the Rothosen in over four months. VfB Stuttgart, Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern had not previously succeeded in this. With the win, Leipzig is now in fifth place in the table with 44 points, but within striking distance of VfB Stuttgart (46 points) in fourth place in the Champions League. HSV is in eleventh place in the table with 26 points and is six points ahead of 17th place in the table. Wolfsburg further down.
The spectators in the sold-out arena saw a brisk opening phase. HSV had two opportunities through Ransford Königsdörffer (4th) and Damian Downs, who forced Maarten Vandevoordt into a brilliant save with his powerful finish (11th). Leipzig had promising offensive moves with Rômulo (8th) and Christoph Baumgartner, who rushed past Ridle Baku’s cross by centimeters (13th).
A little later the home team took the lead with a sparkling counterattack. After a hair-raising bad pass from Castello Lukeba, HSV switched gears at lightning speed. The ball landed via Vieira and Königsdörffer on the right to William Mikelbrencis, who found Vieira with his pass into the backcourt.
